Molen de Ster
‘I live in the Lombok district. My latest local favourite is Bendi, a Turkish supermarket on Damstraat. It’s one of those places where you can buy five wheelbarrows of peppers for a couple of euros. My girlfriend and I often walk past Molen de Ster, where you see the biggest pigs imaginable simply wandering round the yard. They always make me chuckle.’
‘I ate at Florent recently. This restaurant on Visschersplein has a good, simple menu. I wouldn’t normally go out of my way for a restaurant like this, but their potatoes are out of this world. My favourite Indonesian restaurant is Blauw on Springweg, but you have to go to the Surinamese restaurant Pomo on Wittevrouwenstraat for the best peanut soup in Utrecht.’
‘I always advise people to take a stroll through the countless hidden courtyards in Utrecht. Most of them are open to the public, although I have been known to wander into someone’s back garden without knowing it. Talking of gardens: the Pandhof Sinte Marie is a fabulous courtyard garden behind the HKU Utrechts Conservatorium. And you can simply walk into the Arts building of the University at Drift 21. It’s a sort of room with a huge stained glass window.’
‘If you fancy a walk in the country, there’s Amelisweerd, just outside the city. To me, Wilhelmina park is one of the most delightful places in Utrecht. And when you’ve had enough of nature walking through the park, you can take in the vast diversity of other people there instead.’
