The compelling opera ‘Antigona’ by the Italian composer Tommaso Traetta, based on the Greek tragedy of the same name, still rings true today. A king tries to gain control of his city, which is being torn apart by civil conflict. In doing so, he falls out with his brother’s daughter and a bitter family drama ensues. Traetta’s musical score reminds you of Mozart and Gluck, with some phenomenal choir scenes, dramatic arias and a colourful arrangement.
