On 5 December, the Netherlands celebrates Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas). Sinterklaas is the patron saint of children, so the celebrations logically revolve around children, and giving them lots of presents. On Sunday 19 November, Sinterklaas’ steamboat arrives from Spain (where he lives) and docks on Weerdsluis after touring the Utrecht canals. He then mounts his trusty white horse, Amerigo, and continues along his way accompanied by his helpers (Piets). His route finishes on Domplein, where there are plenty of activities for children.
