Ever since the seventeenth century, regents and merchants have been retreating to rural estates outside the city to enjoy the good life. Kasteel Groeneveld, concealed in the woods near Baarn and surrounded by impressive castle gardens planted in English landscaping style, was one such country estate. The original 18th-century wall paintings and plasterwork remind are evidence of the castle’s rich history. This history also covers the post-war period, when Kasteel Groeneveld was a haven for writers and artists from Amsterdam. When it’s open, you can go on a guided tour of the castle. But in times of lockdown, it’s definitely worth going for a walk in the gardens. Afterwards, you can shop for organic products at Hoeve Ravenstein next door.
