California, 2002. Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) is an unruly student on the point of graduating from her conservative high school. She hopes to escape her home town by going to New York to study. Lady Bird’s mother (Laurie Metcalf) is a nurse who works hard to support the family after her husband loses his job. Although Lady Bird has a strained relationship with her wilful mother, they are actually more alike than she realises. Lady Bird is the directing debut of actress Greta Gerwig, who also wrote the screenplay. The film won two Golden Globes: one for best film and one for best actress (Saoirse Ronan).
