Betrayal, judgement and death, but above all love. Most of the words of the St Matthew Passion are almost 2,000 years old, but the message is still relevant today. The St Matthew Passion, the masterpiece composed by Bach, tells the story of the last days of Jesus. In the Netherlands, it is the most frequently performed classical musical work in the period before Easter. Unfortunately, there will be no live St Matthew Passion performances to enjoy this year. The Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht (NPU) had to cancel its performance in the Jacobi church, and the Netherlands Bach Society won’t be performing in TivoliVredenburg either. This has only happened once before in the nearly 100-year history of the society, in 1945. But there’s good news for those who don’t want to spend Easter without enjoying Bach’s masterpiece: on the All of Bach YouTube-channel of the Netherlands Bach Society, you will find an integral recording of the St Matthew Passion under the direction of Jos van Veldhoven, which was recorded in 2014. And the NPU provides you with the registration of its performance of the St Matthew Passion in 2019.
