Brother and sister Van Baaren – Lambertus (1888-1964) and Josephina (1890-1959) – were both avid art collectors. Their collection consists of French and Dutch art works from the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century – some 400 works in all. In this exhibition, the paintings are juxtaposed with furniture pieces by their generational peer and fellow Utrecht resident, Gerrit Rietveld (1884-1964). One can hardly imagine a greater contrast between the fairly conservative taste of the Van Baaren siblings and Rietveld’s desire for innovation.
