The American composer Philip Glass, widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century, drew his inspiration for the opera ‘Satyagraha’ from Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance. The influence of Indian music on this opera, which is considered to be one of the composer’s key works, is unmistakeable. Glass gave his personal consent for sixty western and Indian singers, dancers and musicians to adapt his opera for modern Indian dance.
