Tam Trinh (28), originally from California, moved to the Netherlands five years ago. Together with her Dutch husband Luc, she owns Sugarlips Cakes. Their original focus was on custom made wedding cakes, but they are now branching out towards all kinds of cakes and sweets: from celebration- and birthday cakes to cupcakes, cake pops and macarons. You can find their shop and bakery/studio in Leidsche Rijn district.

Down to earth
‘I must say I prefer living in the Netherlands over living in the US. Before I came to Utrecht, I lived in New York, where I studied professional pastry arts at the International Culinary Center. People are much more down to earth here, which I like a lot.’

Food mecca
‘Utrecht is slowly growing into a food mecca. I love Kimmade on Mariastraat and Oudegracht. The food is delicious and 100% authentic Vietnamese. And I should know, because I’m Vietnamese. My favourite place for coffee is The Village on Voorstraat. When our bakery/studio was still in the city centre, I used to go there every morning. The owners are insanely passionate about their work, which makes listening to their stories very inspiring.’

Mousse cakes
‘I sometimes go to Bond & Smolders on Lijnmarkt, just to have something different to what we make ourselves. Their cakes are delicious, it’s true patisserie. For example, the dome-shaped mousse cakes are incredibly light and airy.’

‘I like the hustle and bustle of the city centre, but I do not like to live in it. That’s why we live in the Leidsche Rijn district. Máximapark is one of my favourite places for a stroll with our 5-month-old son Hudson. We quite often end up at Anafora, a restaurant in the middle of the park. Someday, I would like to go boating on the water in front of Anafora, in one of those swan boats.’
