In the 20th century, Utrecht was a favourite subject for professional film cameramen and women. The demolition of the old station, swimming on a summer day, hippies in the 1970s: it’s all there in wonderful films about the city and region. Cinema pioneer Willy Mullens made one of the most impressive films about Utrecht in 1917, in which you see the city centre gliding past you from the roof of a moving tram. There are also moving images of the Liberation in 1945 and the renovation rage of the 1960s and 70s.
