The Utrecht Archives comprise dozens of kilometres of archive material, half a million photos, films, drawings and prints and a sizeable library housing the city’s historical memory. The brand-new permanent exhibition entitled Utrecht begint hier! (Utrecht starts here!) will show you what makes this city so special. You can see how the characteristic wharfs were built, discover how Utrecht became a student city, experience the first edition of the popular Lowlands music festival (which was held in the Jaarbeurs), see how the water disappeared from the canals and later returned, bike past the city’s most resplendent spots and join the very first traffic jam in 1967, which led to a new phenomenon: roadside tourism. The opening weekend begins on 4 October and is followed by a month of festive activities.
