This summer the Utrecht Summer School is offering a number of small-scale, short, informative and fun events for people who’d like to learn a few things about the city of Utrecht (and the university), and who would like to see some new faces.

Diergeneeskunde, 15 juli
From Animal Health to Animal Welfare. Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht, 1821-2021 – Thursday 15 July from 2 pm until 5 pm
Are you interested to know how veterinary science has developed over the ages? Would you like to see where vet students in Utrecht used to follow their classes and where horses and cows underwent surgery before the vet school moved to the Utrecht Science Park in the 1970s and 1980s? Sign up for an entertaining programme in which Professor Peter Koolmees gives a presentation full of anecdotes and interesting insights in theatre De Berenkuil (Biltstraat), after which he will take the participants on a walk across the former veterinary campus.

Botanische tuinen, 20 en 29 juli
Back to the Future. Botanic Gardens. Tuesday 20 July from 1pm until 4 pm. Or Thursday 29 July 9.30 am until 12.30
The botanic gardens have been part of Utrecht ever since the middle ages. Today, the ‘hortus botanicus’ is located at the Utrecht Science Park. Or, to be more precise, at one of the forts of the Dutch Water Defence Line. Are you curious as to the history of the botanic gardens in Utrecht? What purposes do the gardens serve today? Guided tours are organized both on 20 July as well as on 29 July.

Straatpoëzie, 14 en 17 juli
Street Poetry Walks. Wednesday 14 July from 2 until 5pm. Or Saturday 17 July from 2pm until 5 pm
Did you know there are nearly 200 street poems in Utrecht? Join literary scholar Kila van der Starre on a street poetry walk through the Utrecht city centre and discover a whole new world within the city. Please download the free smartphone app VERS before you start. The walks end on AKWAGLOT, the floating platform in the Singel, where we will enjoy a drink together.
