Ão + Morpheus

Together with Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond, EKKO presents a show with two main programs, one Flemish and one Dutch. In this double bill, they present the Belgian quartet Ão and Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter Morpheus.

The word ‘unique’ is often used, but with Ão, it truly applies. And not just because of the peculiar band name. The Belgian band sensually combines elements of new age, folk, ambient, and synthpop, encompassing both Mozambican-Portuguese and South American influences. The formation around vocalist Brenda Corijn is gentle and hypnotic one moment, danceable and overwhelming the next, like a passionate lover who unexpectedly bites your lips during a tender kiss. For those seeking comparisons with fellow artists, James Blake, Arooj Aftab, and FKA Twigs come to mind, but always fall short. Ão is best captured by the Portuguese word ‘saudade,’ the untranslatable mix of loss, longing, and love. Those who come to listen will feel it.

Morpheus
With his enchanting voice, Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter Morpheus made his debut last year with the EP ‘Morphosis.’ The sudden death of his mother taught him not to wait to do the things he loves. He decided to turn this poignant experience into a healing force: telling authentic stories through his music. Since then, he has gained acclaim with highly praised performances at events like Grasnapolsky and Eurosonic Noorderslag. In preparation for his upcoming release in early 2024, produced by Thomas Azier, he is experimenting with classical and orchestral elements alongside contemporary productions like digital beats.
