The fragility, balance and tension of disguise

Merel Staal:
By constructing her pieces with various materials, subsequently sanding them away fragility arises. Merel captures the material that comes off by sanding her works and transforms this dust into new work. She creates a continuous cycle of peeling off and building up. The resulting works often feature dark hues, evoking a feeling of suppression. Merel’s small-scale sculptures offer an intimate and personal experience for the viewer, drawing them into a world where fragility becomes a source of strength and authenticity. With her artistic approach, Merel Staal provokes reflection and raises profound questions about the human condition around revealing vulnerability in the modern era.
