Behind the stage name Sylvaine is Norwegian multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Kathrine Shepard. Called ‘the petite pixie of the Norwegian black gaze scene’ in her biography, Shepard makes a mix of post-black metal, shoegaze and ambient, topped off with ethereal vocals that instantly transport you to another, better world. Last year they released the ep Eg Er Framand, on which Sylvaine – accompanying herself on a church organ – performs old Norwegian folk melodies, majestic and hushed at the same time.
