New Nijmegen Chamber Orchestra: Victory!

New Nijmegen Chamber Orchestra: Victory!

On 24 and 25 May, the New Nijmegen Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Arjan Tien, plunges into perhaps the most famous musical motif in music history: ta-ta-ta-taaaa. These four notes begin Beethoven’s fifth symphony, also known as the “Schicksal Symphony”. It is often said that Beethoven wanted this motif to symbolise fate coming knocking at the door, but this story is most likely false. Beethoven is said to have actually found the inspiration for his motif while walking through the Prater park in Vienna. There he heard the yellowhammer whistling, whose song indeed sounds like the beginning of the symphony.

Programme
W.A. Mozart – Overture from ‘Die Zauberflöte’
J. Haydn – Trumpet concerto in E-flat
L. van Beethoven – Symphony 5

Conductor: Arjan Tien
Soloist: Bert Langenkamp
