This neo-Renaissance university building dates from 1892 and is the representative and ceremonial heart of Utrecht University.

It was a gift from the citizens and the province of Utrecht to the University of Utrecht for their 250th anniversary in 1886. It took 5 years before construction actually began, due to disagreements about the style of the academy building. The architect Eugen Gugel was eventually build the academy building in the neo-Renaissance style.
