This documentary is Dutch with English subtitles. The aftertalk is in English.

Film & the Future is a coproduction by Podium and Hoogt on Tour. In this series of events, we have a closer look at the rapid developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and how these might affect our (future) everyday life. We see the documentary Ik ben Alice.

The world population is getting older. More people are reliant on daily care as they age, while at the same time fewer and fewer people are available to do this work. Can AI provide a solution? Healthcare robot Alice has been programmed as the ideal caregiver – she never gets tired and is always available. A robot can tell you when to take your meds and when to exercise, but can it also reduce loneliness?

In the touching Dutch documentary Ik ben Alice (2015), directed by Sander Burger, we see how Alice moves into the homes of three single-living women of age. The ladies and their families are sceptical about the experiment at first. But gradually, the women begin to treat Alice as a human being and chat, sing and laugh with her. As Alice gets to know their world and is gradually being attuned to the women by a research team, we see the contours of the future of elderly care lined out. Can robots replace humans when it comes to taking care of the elderly? Will we all have an Alice when we get old?

Aftertalk with expert guest

After the movie, we will host an aftertalk with an expert guest from the field of robotisation and AI that you can ask all your questions. Name to be announced soon, so make sure to check this page for updates.
