For many people getting married is a big event. Whether it was a big or small celebration, their wedding day was one of the most special days of their lives. The exhibition Gewoon Getrouwd shows how ordinary people in ordinary Utrecht neighbourhoods got married between 1950 and 1975. They share their stories, pictures and dresses and take you back to the day they officially said: ‘I do’.

What did their wedding day look like? How did they get hold of that beautiful dress? Should the dress to be white, or not? Where did they meet the man or woman of their dreams? Being married brought about quite a few changes. What were the consequences regarding work and daily life in those days?

The exhibition is the result of hundreds of interviews with ‘ordinary’ people as recorded by the Volksbuurtmuseum. At first only Wijk C residents were interviewed, later also residents of other Utrecht neighbourhoods joined. The interviewees talked about their daily lives; their wedding day often turned out to be a milestone in their lives.
