Stadsbrasserie de Utrechter, situated at Vredenburg, will host an exhibition throughout 2023 featuring poet/librettist and smartphone-art artist Ruben van Gogh. The exhibition comprises a selection of 17 recent artworks specifically curated for the brasserie’s space. Visitors will encounter Utrechtian, surrealist scenes in the lounge area, a ‘green’ series of digital, repeating graphics along the windows, and works from his so-called Empty Livings on the pillars, wherein Van Gogh furnishes abandoned rooms with new inhabitants. This exhibition provides art enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to discover Van Gogh’s innovative artistry.

Van Gogh solely uses a smartphone to create his art, based on self-taken smartphone photos and elements from historical paintings. He employs apps such as Snapseed, Mirrorlab, and Superimpose to craft alienating collages and repeating graphics. Van Gogh’s visual language is entirely distinctive, characterized by surrealistic elements and refreshing colors. His art is accessible and recognizable yet filled with hidden symbolism, a kind of 2.0 art that will certainly appeal to a younger audience as well.

Ruben van Gogh has been active for a long time as a poet and librettist and is currently the Guild Master of the Utrecht City Poets’ Guild. In 2022, his City Opera ‘Trijn’ premiered at TivoliVredenburg. In recent years, he has also notably focused on smartphone art, as seen in his successful ‘Tikkie Kunst’ project, offering art for a ‘tikkie’ in 2021, and an exhibition at Emmaus Haarzuilens in 2022, where he repurposed objects from this thrift store to give them a second life in his smartphone art
