Annemijn Rijk: The Lab

Annemijn Rijk: The Lab

Body of Art / Annemijn Rijk, in collaboration with Theun Mosk, presents The Lab — an immersive, sensory experience in which sound, light, space, and movement distort your perception.

As you move through a scenographically designed environment, you are submerged in a new world. A world that swallows and enfolds you, where getting lost seems inevitable, and your senses are disrupted and challenged. In this in-between space, you detach from existing walls, shift from spectator to main character, and break with rules and expectations. You explore your own ways of thinking, to eventually ask the collective question: Where are we headed?

An Exercise in Wandering

In an ever-changing, accelerating world, it becomes difficult to orient ourselves. The Lab is not only an artistic experience but also an exercise in navigating an uncertain future. What skills do we need to develop to stay upright? What responsibilities must we accept as humans? And which beliefs and habits can we release?

The Lab offers no answers and no new certainties, but creates space to practice with uncertainty and directionlessness. By moving, taking steps yourself, in (almost) complete darkness, your grasp on the environment and on reality begins to shift. Can we cope with this discomfort? Can we get lost? And who are we, if we have no goal or direction?

“Wandering in the Anthropocene is a permanent condition with an uncertain outcome. Our task is not to find a way out of the labyrinth of existence, but to learn how to navigate the wandering itself.”
– René ten Bos, Professor of Philosophy
