Dull Skull

A duo show that brings together installation art and everyday objects by Benjamin Schoones and Jeroen Schrijver. Recontextualising these “found objects” is central to the artistic practice of both artists. By detaching them from their familiar surroundings, these objects can be questioned and rediscovered. Items meant for public spaces are given a personal edge or a character of their own. Through a slowed-down gaze, new details emerge. The everyday becomes slightly absurd, sometimes even cartoonish.

As if in slow motion, background elements take centre-stage. Jeroen Schrijver explores our appreciation of “that which we tend to overlook” by slowing things down and highlighting them. Pop-like cartoons flank forgotten constructs. In his installation works, Benjamin Schoones blends quiet presence with a noisy character. Heavy objects become floaty and mundane.

In a playful way, a process of humanisation takes place in the works of both artists. Hence the title Dull Skull. Traditionally, the skull represents death and dark matters. But as an emoji, it has acquired a new meaning, playfully pointing out the blunt stupidity of a person or situation.

The exhibition Dull Skull will be on view at Kunsthal Kloof from 9 January to 22 February. Opening on Friday 9 January at 20:00.
