Where are the horses?

What’s the best way to discover a city like Utrecht? Before 1900, you jumped onto the horse-drawn tram and did a circuit. In the early 20th century, this was replaced by a new invention: the electric tram. This is a picture of one on Mariaplaats, on its way to the Dom Tower. Passengers took a long time getting used to them. Where was the front and where was the back? You couldn’t tell without the horse. And people were afraid of electric shocks. In addition, this was the first tram with fixed stops: you couldn’t just jump off when you felt like it.
