Meet the street

Kanaalstraat

Kanaalstraat cuts right through the Lombok district, to the west of the city centre. This lively street is bursting with delis, bakeries and local shops.

1 – Local store

Morty’s

Kanaalstraat 57

Keep your eyes peeled at the start of Kanaalstraat or you’ll miss this tiny deli. Morty’s has a wide assortment of local products and organic products, such as cheese, fresh bread and honey. You can also buy Italian and Spanish salami and ham, olives and tapenades. Everything you need for the perfect al fresco lunch.

2 – Dom Tower wine

Slijterij Jan Besseling

Kanaalstraat 65

If it’s a good wine, liqueur or locally brewed beer you’re after, look no further than Slijterij Besseling. The shop has been around for 43 years, and is now run by father and son Besseling. Ask for the local ‘Domtoren’ wine or a Domtoren beer if you are searching for an original souvenir. Or go for ‘Domtoren Neut’, a herby liqueur.

3 – From far and wide

Persepolis

Kanaalstraat 82

This shop sells products from Southern Europe and the Middle East to ingredients for an Indian curry or Japanese ramen: whatever you want, Persepolis will have it. And if there’s something you can’t find, there’s always someone to help you.

4 – Turkish brunch

Yunak

Kanaalstraat 84

Need a break from shopping? Then you should head to Yunak, a Turkish restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Think Turkish tea with baklava, kano pizza and kumpir (a jacket potato, Turkish style). If anything, try the Turkish breakfast. This means you can choose seven different things from the menu to start your day.

5 – Culture café

Kopi Susu

J.P. Coenstraat 69 (on the corner of Kanaalstraat)

In Indonesian, kopi susu doesn’t just mean ‘coffee with milk’, but also ‘of mixed origins’. This is certainly reflected in the feel of this café, which serves as a local community meeting place. You’ll find coffee and spekkoek, and a whole programme of cultural activities including exhibitions, live music and free workshops.
